About PlayED

PlayED is a complete, standards-aligned, hands-on mathematics curriculum for Kindergarten through Grade 5, aligned to Florida BEST Standards. Every lesson is built around physical engagement with the PlayED Mat system as the primary learning experience, not as a supplement to instruction. Students build, touch, move, and construct understanding before they are ever asked to represent it abstractly.

Built Different

Schools are designed around children. Classrooms are designed around children. Teachers spend hours arranging furniture, building literacy centers, creating small group spaces, and preparing every corner of the room for how children learn best. Then we hand them a curriculum and ask the children to fit inside it.

PlayED flips that. The curriculum was built around the child. The physical engagement, the structured routine, the built-in support, all of it starts with how children actually learn and builds outward from there. No modifications required. No accommodations bolted on after the fact. Just a system that works for every child from Day 1.

Every PlayED lesson follows the same four phase structure:

Phase 1: Daily Fact Fluency Drill

Five minutes of subitizing practice that functions as both skill building and daily diagnostic. The teacher learns something about every child every single day.

Phase 2: Free Build

Five minutes of unstructured tactile exploration with the materials for that lesson. Children engage with the tools before instruction begins so their hands already know the tools when learning starts.

Phase 3: Scripted Lesson

Fifteen to twenty minutes of direct instruction using the PlayED Mat and overlays. Every script is research based, every move is intentional, and every child is physically engaged throughout.

Phase 4: Partner Extension

Optional structured partner work that creates a natural window for small group instruction and built-in intervention. No separate program needed. The support is already there.

Built on the Science of Learning

PlayED is grounded in the concrete-pictorial-abstract learning progression, subitizing research, working memory science, multisensory instruction, and brain-based learning. Every lesson engages the hands, the eyes, and the body before the brain abstracts. Movement is not a reward. It is the instruction.
